How to Make an eBook

Updated on August 9, 2013

What are eBooks and Why Make One?

E books are electronic version of printed books that are mostly downloaded from a popular online store; websites. The contents are usually stored in a CD, Hard drives and DVD. This format apart from being an effective mode is also becoming popular among readers of all generations. Many business houses use eBooks as an effective tool of marketing. They create e- books that include information and specifications of the product or service the business houses are willing to promote.

How to make an eBook

Setting up the Manuscript

The first step is to convert MS word File into PDF format. PDF are really easy to convert to eBook. The standard sizes of an eBook are 5 1/2 by 8 ½ and 6 x 9.if you design an eBook according to the mentioned size then it will be easy to convert the same into a printed book. Once the format is decided it is time to alter the set up of the pages .You can customize the set up according to your requirement. The eBook you create should be user friendly.

Once the book has been formatted then next important task is to concentrate on the text. You need to determine the font and font size of the text. You can modify the text through "select all or edit" option. The recommended font size is between 10 and 12 and the font Times New Roman. This is the most popular font and size used widely across the planet. You can check the traditional books to verify the right format.

The next important task is to determine the margin of the pages. The margin is selected according to the size of the page .In case your eBook is small then the page margin must also be small. It is essential to maintain appropriate proportion between the page size and page margin.

The next important areas are the footer and header. The header includes the name of the writer and the footer consists of the page numbers. According to the standard format the footer should always be placed on the centre of the page. The header is determined according to the book you create .However popular books have the header on the centre and middle of the page. Not if you already have a book published you still can convert your book to eBook with out sending your manuscript, but rather the print version of the book. If you are in that option manuscripts will be easier to edit, and if you want make changes easier, but just in case the file was corrupted or lost a print book still can be converted to an eBook.

Check for Errors

I can't stress how important it is to check your eBook before you publish it. Make sure the spacing is correct, all your words are spelled correctly. Once it is converted and sold you can fix those mistakes even though it is electronic. Below is a video that explains the most common eBook publishing mistakes.

eBook Formatting

Now you just need to take your PDF to eBook format. The most standard eBook format is ePub. There is PDF software for converting the file into an eBook, however it can be very complex, take a lot of time, and your quality may not turn out as well as if you took it to a publisher. Worst of all you might not get it in all of the diffrent eBook formats you will need as well as DRM technology to protect your eBook from piracy. I personally recommend makeabookapp.com they are experts in eBook formatting and DRM Technology. To learn more about DRM Technology look at the DRM Technology video in the Video Section below. If

eBook Marketing

Great now that you have a book you need to market. Just having your book on the most popular eBook stores won't sell your eBook. You need to promote your book through eBook marketing such as Social Media Outlets, Search Engine Optimization, Ads on the internet, author apps, and even offline tactics. Some offline eBook marketing strategies would be getting book reviews, publishing press releases, and even doing book signings and attending writing conferences.
